Four Boston Independent Bookstores To Support When Shopping Online (+Giveaway)

Many businesses and stores across the U.S. (and world) have been forced to shut their doors, and independent bookstores are no exception. Some independent bookstores have already had to lay off a majority of their employees in order to stay afloat while their doors are closed. As many of you know, I go to school in Boston, MA so I have seen what is happening with many Boston bookstores in the wake of this pandemic. I wanted to highlight some of these stores that have shipping options (many have inexpensive or free shipping as well), so you can support them even when their physical doors are closed.

1. Brookline Booksmith

Brookline Booksmith, based out of Brookline, MA, is currently closed and does not offer curbside or local delivery. However, they currently offer items via media mail or priority shipping on their website or phone calls from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday-Saturday!

2. Porter Square Books

Porter Square Books holds a special place in my heart because I did an overnight read-a-thon at their location, and it was one of the best experiences I’ve ever had. They are based out of Cambridge, MA and are closed as well. They do offer free shipping on book orders, free delivery to orders based in Cambridge and Somerville, and curbside pickup for folks nearby!

3. Trident Booksellers

Trident Booksellers, located only a few ‘T’ stops from me, is a Boston independent bookstore staple. They no longer offer curbside pickup, but they offer online orders as well as UberEats and Grubhub delivery for their cafe!

4. Harvard Bookstore

Harvard Bookstore has been a Cambridge landmark since the 1930s. Much like the others on this list, Harvard Bookstore is currently offering free shipping through their online store. They no longer have curbside pick up as of March 23.

There are so many more incredible bookstores in Boston and beyond, so I hope this small list is just a start on where you can send your monetary support to. If you don’t exactly have the extra funds to purchase from these stores, that’s no problem! I am currently hosting a giveaway on my Twitter where you can win a book of your choice from the independent bookstore of your choice! It doesn’t have to be one of the ones I listed here! As long as they ship book orders, it is fair game!

Thank you so much for reading! I hope you are all staying healthy and safe during this weird time. If you’ve visited Boston, have you visited any of these bookstores? Which one is your favorite? Are there any other independent bookstores you love? I’d love to hear more about the independent bookstores you love!
